Super Science

Super Science Super Milk
We used two everyday ingredients to illustrate how Avonmore Super Milk can be transformed from a liquid to a solid bone like structure.

When an acid such as vinegar is added to milk it causes a chemical reaction.

This chemical reaction causes the protein molecules in the milk to clump together to form white lumps called curd and the liquid is called whey. When the whey is drained off, the curd can be pressed, dried and moulded into a solid bone like structure.

Did you know?

Calcium is essential to build strong bones and teeth early in life and Vitamin D is just as important, since without it, we can’t absorb the calcium! Avonmore Super Milk is a rich source of Vitamin D and just one 250ml glass has 100% of the EU recommended daily intake.

Did you know an adult has 206 bones in their body and young babies are born with over 300 bones? Calcium is very important for growing bones, if you don't eat enough your body will take it from your bones. Running, jumping and Skipping will also help to make your bones strong. Vitamin D is made on your skin when it is exposed to sunlight.

We had great fun learning all these facts and creating our skeletons!

Schools Long Ago in Ireland

Third and Fourth class recently explored the history of schooling in Ireland from early times to the twentieth century. We really enjoyed learning about all the different types of schools and seeing how different they were to our school today. We looked at education throughout different time periods; Pre-Christian and Christian Times Early Irish Monastic Schools Hedge School – 17 th  & 18 th  Century National Schools in the 19th Century We explored in detail School 100 Years Ago. Here is a summary of all we learned, through examining photographs, memoirs, artifacts, roll-books and school reports: Life in Irish Schools was very different 100 years ago. There were no computers, CD players, gel pens or markers. Many schools were small; often they had only one room. There was no running water and the heat came from a fireplace behind the teacher’s desk. Taking care of the schoolhouse was everyone’s job. Families took turns sending wood to the school for heating.
