Science Week: Day 4: Design a Pop up Sustainable Town

Caring for the Planet

Third and Fourth Class have been busy learning about the impact of Climate change.

Here are some impacts of Climate change on our planet:

Rising Sea-Level:

Sea level has risen about 8 inches due to the melting of glaciers and ice sheets. The warming of seas and oceans is also making coastal storms more damaging.

Ocean acidification:

Extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is absorbed by the oceans, making them more acidic. This can make it difficult for corals and microorganisms that form shells to survive, disrupting the food supply for other sea animals.

Heat waves

Heat waves are long periods of time with above-normal temperatures. As the Earth warms, more areas will be at risk for hotter and more frequent extreme heat waves.

Wildfires:

These are large fires that burn vast amounts of forests and brush. When they are not controlled, wildfires can destroy homes and be deadly.

Drought:

Global warming will increase the risk of drought in some regions.

We had great fun designing our sustainable towns!

Grandparents' Day

Grandparents' Day was a truly special occasion at our school, filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. The children were thrilled to share their classrooms and activities with their grandparents, who brought such warmth and joy to the day. A huge thank you to all the parents who contributed the delicious baked goods—it was a real treat for everyone and added to the festive atmosphere. It was heartwarming to see generations coming together and celebrating the importance of family. We are so grateful for the wonderful community spirit that made the day such a success!

Galway Chess Finals

Congratulations to the children who participated in the Galway Chess Final at the Ardilaun Hotel in Galway last Wednesday. It was a wonderful experience to spend the day playing chess with other students from schools across Galway. The event provided a great opportunity to challenge ourselves, improve our skills, and enjoy friendly competition. We also had a fantastic time meeting and making new friends. Well done to all involved!

Visit from Garda Gerard Naughton

During the month of May, we had the pleasure of welcoming Garda Gerard Naughton to our school for an important talk on internet safety and drug awareness. He shared valuable information about how to stay safe online, including how to protect our personal information, recognise online dangers, and use social media responsibly. Garda Naughton was very engaging and took the time to answer all of our questions. We are confident about how to stay safe both online and in everyday life.
